The Alabama Department of Transportation has opened the final section of the Linden Bypass to traffic as part of construction of the West Alabama Highway.
ALDOT says motorists can now travel the four-lane route connecting US 43 south of Linden to SR 69 north of the city.
When additional work is completed later this summer, the 7.7-mile, four-lane divided highway will fully serve as SR-303 and complete the Linden Bypass, ALDOT said in a statement.
The project is the first segment of the West Alabama Highway announced by Governor Kay Ivey in 2021 to improve transportation infrastructure and economic opportunities across west Alabama.
The new bypass is designed to move through traffic and heavy trucks around downtown Linden. ALDOT says it will improve safety, reduce congestion and create a more efficient route for travelers and freight carriers.
“This is a major step toward completion of the Linden Bypass and an important investment in the future of west Alabama,” said Matt Ericksen, ALDOT Southwest Region Engineer. “This project improves safety, enhances mobility and creates new opportunities for economic growth throughout the region.”
Although the route is now open to traffic, construction activities remain underway. Motorists should use caution, follow all posted signs and obey reduced speed limits while crews complete the remaining work.
