Black ice

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is warning the public of black ice on the roads as freezing weather persists this morning.

Black ice is defined as a thin layer of ice that is difficult to see and can increase the chances of traffic accidents.

A statement from ALDO said that crews are working to de-ice bridges and roadways and clear snow but some icy patches may remain on roads that seem passable.

ALDOT urges the public to exercise caution and follow these tips:

  • Avoid travel until conditions improve
  • Slow down if driving
  • Be aware of black ice
  • Avoid sudden braking and steering
  • Turn on headlights
  • Avoid using cruise control
  • Watch for workers
  • Move vehicles off of roads in case of crashes

Updates from ALDOT Southeast Region can be seen on social media here.
