Auburn University Rural Studio and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System will host a free Homestead Day on Sept. 12 in Newbern for small landowners, farmers and anyone interested in rural living.
The event will feature demonstrations, professional advice and hands-on activities involving food, farming, water, land and homes.
"Rural Studio and the College of Architecture, Design and Construction are excited to partner with Alabama Extension’s Aquatics Resources Team to bring the first ever Homestead Day to Hale County,” said Emily McGlohn, associate professor in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture. “We’ve assembled a great group of experts for a day of exploring all aspects of land ownership in Alabama.”
Activities will focus on agriculture, conservation, gardening and more.
“This day has something for everyone with a piece of land, whether large or small,” Extension Aquatic Resources Agent Corey Courtwright said. “If you want to learn to grow more of your own food, preserve your home-produced food, manage a pond for fish and food or bring your kids for them to learn about science in hands-on ways, all of this and more will be featured.”
The event will be held on five locations along Alabama Highway 61 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A schedule and more information, as well as registration can be found here.
