Officials broke ground for a new $2.4 million academic building for Southern Academy in Greensboro.
The project will have four new classrooms and two bathrooms doubling as an ICC 500-rated storm shelter.
"Designed by Ward Scott Morris Architecture, the 5,500 square-foot structure connecting to the Elementary Wing will occupy the southwest corner of campus at Armory Street & Highway 14," said a press release.
"The building solves two of the K-12 school’s most immediate needs: more teaching space due to enrollment growth and improved safety for students and faculty in a tornado-prone area."
WAR Construction is the general contractor.
The project was partly funded by the nonprofit Friends of Southern, Inc. which launched the BUILD STRONG capital campaign that raised $720,655 in donations.
Present at the groundbreaking were Southern Academy Trustees, headmaster Bobby Beasley, builders Mark Lancaster and Frank Kelly of WAR, architect Wally Burge of Ward Scott Morris, students representing the SGA and Elementary SGA and the varsity cheerleading squad.
