The Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF) is mourning after its co-founder, former Alabama Lieutenant Governor George McMillan Jr. passed away on April 18 at the age of 81.

McMillan was born in Greenville and went on to serve in the Alabama House of Representatives in 1973 before being elected to the Alabama Senate from 1974 to 1978, and was elected Lieutenant Governor on November 7, 1978.

"But for those of us at BBCF, George’s greatest legacy lives on in the foundation he helped to build," said a recent statement from BBCF. "As one of five co-founders of the Black Belt Community Foundation, George envisioned a new kind of philanthropic model—one rooted in community, equity, and the belief that the people of the Black Belt are the region’s greatest asset."

In addition to being a co-founder, he served on the Board of Directors and was chair of it for three years.

"We are forever grateful for George McMillan’s vision, generosity, and unwavering belief in the promise of the Black Belt," said the statement. "May his legacy continue to inspire all who work for justice, opportunity, and hope in our communities. George lives on in the work that BBCF will continue to do every day in service to the communities of the Black Belt."
