Multiple shelters in the Black Belt that serve victims of abuse are benefitting from a round of grants from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA).
A statement from ADECA said that the shelters are receiving money from the Domestic Violence Trust Fund, which is generated through a marriage recording fee and is distributed on a quarterly basis.
$105,757 was awarded to the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence and $80,000 to the state Office of Prosecution Services.
More than $2 million was distributed to domestic violence agencies in the fiscal year 2024-2025.
“These funds provide sanctuary and safety for domestic violence victims and innocent family members who must escape dangerous and uncertain situations,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am thankful for these shelters and their staff for the assistance they provide.”
The following from the Black Belt were part of the grants:
- SAN Inc. (Turning Point) – Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Pickens, Sumter and Tuscaloosa counties.
- Domestic Violence Intervention Center – Chambers, Lee, Macon, Randolph and Tallapoosa counties.
- Selma and Blackbelt Regional Abuse (SABRA) Sanctuary – Dallas, Greene, Marengo, Perry, Sumter and Wilcox counties.
- Montgomery Area Family Violence Program (Family Sunshine Center) – Autauga, Butler, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes and Montgomery counties.
- The House of Ruth – Barbour, Bullock, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston and Pike counties.
- Penelope House – Choctaw, Clarke, Mobile and Washington counties.
“As shown through her support for this program, Gov. Ivey is serious about creating an avenue for victims of domestic violence and their non-offending family members to have places to go when they are abused or feel threatened,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to be a partner in this program.”
