Black Voters Matter (BVM) will host two events - a warrant clinic and a discussion about gun violence - on Friday, March 7 as the Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee weekend kicks off.Â
The Jubilee Warrant Clinic will be held at 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Ellwood Christian on Academy 1 Bell Road. Offered by BVM and Growing Real Alternatives Everywhere the clinic will eliminate warrants for outstanding traffic and misdemeanor offenses.
"Warrant clinic events are held in predominantly Black and underserved communities to combat the decades of racial profiling and targeted policing in these areas," said a press release from BVM. "The goal of this program is to promote community justice and police accountability."
"Blood on the Bridge: Gun Violence from Bloody Sunday to Today" will be presented at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and featuring:Â
Black Voters Matter
Growing Real Alternatives Everywhere (GRAE)
Representatives from the Dallas County Fourth Circuit Court
Rev. Mark Thompson, Make It Plain
NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF)
Selma Center for Nonviolence
"We'll examine how voting rights and electoral power directly shape the policies that either prevent or perpetuate violence in our communities," the press release said. "Together, we'll explore how past economic weapons shaped today's challenges, and map out solutions for a safer, stronger Selma."
