More money, more officers, more equipment and more cars are part of an improved Selma Police Department, according to Police Chief Kenta Fulford.

Fulford said the number of police officers on the Selma Police force is growing thanks to a nearly $10,000-per-year raise that brought the starting pay to just over $40,000.

“We went from 23 to 31 officers,” Fulford said. “I don’t know of any other department that has done that in the last six months of the year and with the pandemic. I contribute that to the council giving that raise to the officers. That really motivated them.” He said better pay has helped entice officers from other departments to come to Selma.
