15 of more than 30 chickens were recently confiscated from a residence in Selma after complaints were made and the city is reminding the public that keeping poultry is illegal within city limits.Â
A post on social media by the city said that the chickens were picked up from a property on Mabry Street without a caretaker being present. An owner could not be found when police inquired.Â
Afterwards the owner was found to be in violation of city ordinance.Â
"City of Selma regulations prohibit keeping poultry or livestock within residential areas, meaning that maintaining chickens at a home in city limits is not allowed," said the post. "The confiscation was carried out in accordance with this ordinance."
"Residents are reminded that it is unlawful to raise or keep farm animals (including chickens) inside the city limits without proper authorization, as such activities are restricted to appropriate zones or facilities for health and safety reasons. Compliance with this ordinance is important to ensure community health standards and to prevent nuisances."
The chickens are now under the care of the Selma Animal Shelter.Â
