Children's of Alabama given grant for campaign to prevent heat deaths of children in cars

A grant was awarded by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) to Children's of Alabama in Birmingham for a campaign to prevent deaths and injuries of children in hot vehicle. 

$127,780 was given for the campaign, said an announcement from Gov. Kay Ivey. 

“The loss of a child’s life due to being carelessly left alone in a hot vehicle is an unspeakable tragedy that sadly continues to occur across this nation,” she said. “This grant will perform a vital role in enabling Children’s of Alabama to conduct a public awareness campaign to drive home the critical message that children must never be left unattended in vehicles. Young lives are at stake.”

The announcement cited statistics from Children's of Alabama saying that heat strokes from being left in hot vehicles is a leading cause of deaths for children. 

The grant was made available from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey and Children’s of Alabama in this life-saving campaign,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
