Mike Lewis says the battleship Alabama has a special place in his heart.

He didn’t serve aboard the “Lucky A.” But he was among the thousands of Alabama school children who helped bring the warship to its namesake state. “I remember being in fourth grade, and every student gave a dime to bring the battleship Alabama to Mobile,” Lewis said. “To this day, when I go by it, I remember I had a part in bringing it here.” 

Lewis said he hopes citizens from Selma and throughout the country will have a chance to be a part of a another bigger-than-life project: illuminating the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
