City of Selma, Black Belt Community Foundation fund truck stop access road

The Selma City Council agreed to fund an access road for a truck stop coming to Highway 14.

Selma is putting up $65,000 from the city’s bond fund for the access road, and the Black Belt Community Foundation is putting up $75,000 for the road. Selma Mayor Johnny Moss III said the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is helping fund the truck stop project.

In other business, the city council approved almost $54,000 to fund a bonus for city retirees who retired before Oct. 1, 2025 based on their years of service. 

City Attorney Graham Mosley recommended that the council set the special election for the empty Ward 1 council seat for Dec. 8. Mosley said Dallas County can’t make their computerized voting machines available to the city until after the November general election.

The seat was vacated when the council removed Councilman Troy Harvill because he stopped attending meetings.

The council also took action to purchase a new scoreboard for Memorial Stadium. The new scoreboard will cost $24,295, and removing the old scoreboard and installing the new unit will cost about $13,600.

Alabama Sen. Robert Stewart donated $50,000 in state funds to the restoration of the storm-damaged stadium. About $29,000 of that went toward a new playground unit, and the remaining $20,600 will go toward the new scoreboard.

Dekorators, a Selma business, donated $17,000 in exchange for a sign on the new scoreboard, leaving $292 to finish the project. The city council approved that expenditure.

City officials said they are researching if a school wants to place the old scoreboard on their field.
