Lynda Lowery

Lynda Blackmon Lowery

One of Selma's most renowned foot soldiers has passed away.

Dr. Lynda Blackmon-Lowery died on Dec. 24. A Celebration of Life will be held Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church.

Dr. Lowery will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will immediately follow at Lorenzo Harrison Memorial Gardens (Elmwood).

Lowery was the youngest child to participate in the 1965 marches for equal Voting Rights. She received an injury to her head in the Bloody Sunday march that required 35 stitches. She came back to the bridge for “Turn Around Tuesday,” where the march from Selma to Montgomery was completed.

Since then, she continued her advocacy for the Selma community and for educating Americans on the history of the Civil Rights movement.

She retired from Cahaba Mental Health where she served as their senior case manager.

Lowery was honored by Foot Soldiers Park in the 60th anniversary commemoration of Bloody Sunday with an award as a Civil Rights hero.
