The Crenshaw County Sheriff's Office mourns the passing of a former sheriff, Louis H. “Sonny” Carpenter III, who died recently at the age of 79.

"Sheriff Carpenter dedicated his life to public service, leaving an indelible mark on our community," said a post on the department's Facebook page, which detailed his life and service to the county.

Carpenter began his career with law enforcement at the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (AWFF) as a game warden. He served in AWFF from 1968 until his retirement in 1994.

A year later Carpenter became sheriff of Crenshaw County in 1995. He would act as sheriff for one term until 1999.

"Sheriff Carpenter's legacy as a public servant will always be remembered fondly," said the department's Facebook post. "His contributions to law enforcement will never be forgotten."

"Our thoughts and condolences go out to Sheriff Carpenter's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May they find solace in the cherished memories."
