The D&L Phillies recently completed a perfect season and won the 10U Baseball Tournament Championship held at the Dallas County Sports Plex.

The team of 10 year olds from across Dallas County won the tournament 18-0 over the Orioles, another Dallas County team.

The Phillies, comprised of nine returning players and three rookies, finished

the regular season 9-0 with an average score of 15-2. Led by strong pitching and excellent hitting the entire season, the Phillies didn’t surrender their first hit by an opponent until the fifth game.

As the top-ranked team entering tournament play, they received an opening round bye before defeating the Red Sox in a thrilling last inning victory in the second round playoff game.  For most of the night, Red Sox ace Lance Ward, kept the Phillies off the bases with superb pitching. Going into the final at bat, Phillies veteran Phillip Smith began the inning with a critical single before making his way around the bases on back-to-back steals. After Smith tied the game, leadoff hitter Liam Mims drew a walk and was able to complete consecutive steals before crossing the plate on a passed ball giving the Phillies a 6-5 victory.

The Phillies then faced the red-hot Orioles in the Winner-Take-All Championship game. While the Phillies were coming off sluggish play in their previous game, the Orioles had just completed back-to-back victories over the Shellshock Contractors in the opening round and the Dodgers in the 2nd round.  Taking the mound for the Phillies was Liam Mims, one of their ace pitchers.  Mims was part of a deep rotation of pitchers who opened the season with 4 consecutive No Hitters.  For the final game, Mims was at his best. Supported by excellent defensive play in the field and an offensive explosion from his teammates, Mims pitched his 3rd no hitter of the season in route to an 18-0 victory and securing the Tournament Championship.

With the perfect 11-0 season completed, six of the Phillies were selected to the 10U All Star Team, the most of any team in the league. Those players are KJ Blevins, Jude Jones, Liam Mims, Noah South, Hain Spivey, and Cannon Lane.

The Phillies were coached by Steven South, Brent Mims, Steven Wingo and Dan Lane.

Special thanks to Pepsi Cola of Selma and D&L Construction for sponsoring the Phillies the last two seasons.
