Dallas County Recreation Director James Spears said registration for Selma / Dallas County Baseball and Softball is underway. And he has extended it a few days.
Spears told the Dallas County Commission that about 150 kids have signed up so far. That’s compared to last year when there were 400 kids and 42 teams.
Spears said the original registration deadline was Feb. 24. However, he has extended the deadline until Feb. 29 to be sure everyone has a chance to register.
“Registration is going on now at the courthouse annex in the courtroom chambers from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday,” Spears reported. He added that Saturday’s registration is at the Sportsplex from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Registration fee is $25.
The first season is for girls and boys aged 5 through 12. They start play March 30 and play through May 25. The high school league, which is through 18 years old, will start May 27 and play through July 4. Spears said there is also T ball for 3- and 4-year-olds.
All games are played at the Sportsplex on Highway 219 just off of Highway 80. “The games are Monday and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We don’t play on Wednesday,” Spears said. “We play only three Saturday’s during the season.” One of those Saturdays is the opening ceremony on March 30.
Coaches are needed. If you are interested in coaching, you can call Spears at 334-407-6227. He said coaches can coach any age group they wish. He said anyone or any business wanting to be a sponsor can call that same number. He said potential sponsors can go to the Courthouse Annex in the same place as registration. The sponsorship forms are there, and all fees can be paid there too.
Commission Chair and Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn said now that the commission is aware of the sign-up date, they will help get the word out. “The commission wants to have a successful program,” Nunn said.
Spears said he is not worried about the number of coaches and players that have signed up so far. “People wait to the last minute,” he said. But he encouraged anyone interested to go ahead and get registered.
