After a difficult 2025 football season, Selma High Saints opened the 2026 season strong with a 62-0 win over GW Carver High at Memorial Stadium Friday night.
Selma entered the season with several key changes: a new coach and several new players.
The Saints’ new coach, Charles Moody, came to Selma in the spring from rival Southside High where he built a winning program over seven years. Several players from his team came with him, including record yard thrower quarterback Kole Moody and four-star wide receiver and University of Alabama commit Cedrick Simmons, who scored most of the team’s touchdowns Friday night. Â
While Selma had strong completion, Carver struggled mostly due to bad snaps and costly losses of yardage.Â
The scoring started about seven minutes into the first quarter with a bad snap in a kickoff that led to a safety for the Saints and a score of 2-0.
The first touchdown was a short pass from Moody to Simmons who ran it in, bringing the score to 8-0.
The Saints’ Michael Hosea got the next touchdown and after not making the two-point conversion, the score was then 14-0.
Jordan Glover got a shot at the endzone and took it, running the ball in for a touchdown and the two-point conversion was good, so the score went to 22-0.
Carver got its first taste of the endzone at the end of the first quarter with a catch at the 1-yard line but a facemask penalty cost them the scoring opportunity.
That just gave the Saints more time to add up their number as Number 0 Caden Curtis ran in another TD and after the successful two-point conversion showed a score of 30-0.
Hosea got another chance to score in the second quarter to bring the score to 38-0.
The night continued to rain points for the Saints as Simmons, who also plays defense, caught an interception in the third quarter for a TD and Simmons finished the game off with a rushing touchdown to complete the shutout 62-0.
Selma plays rival Southside next Thursday at Southside.
