Wallace athletes sign to play for state colleges

Three Wallace Community College volleyball players received scholarships to further their volleyball careers at four-year institutions. 

Sophomore’s Katlyn Lawson and Erin Nelson will be attending Stillman College in Tuscaloosa and Shanija Shines will be attending Oakwood College in Huntsville. 

In a room with family, friends, teammates and coaches, the players signed their scholarships to seal the deal. 

Lawson said she is fulfilling a dream of playing college sports.

“I am very thankful to God for this wonderful opportunity,” Lawson said. “Playing at the collegiate level has been a dream since I started playing sports. Being a student athlete is very challenging yet rewarding. Over my time here at Wallace I have learned balance to maintain good grades and perform on the court. This experience taught me hard work, dedication and trusting in my coach. Some people aren’t able to see the vision, however, this was a learning experience for myself. As I transition from one school to another I plan to continue to maintain good grades and perform expeditiously.”

Shines said the scholarship makes her want to keep playing the sport.

“Getting an opportunity to be able to play volleyball on the next level is one of the best things that has happened,” Shines said. “There have been times where I didn’t know if I wanted to continue playing this sport or not. It’s a unique opportunity to excel on the court while furthering my education. Playing volleyball at Wallace Community College helped me with knowing what to expect when playing on a college level.”
