The city of Demopolis is getting tough on code violations.

The city has sent letters concerning code violations to the owners of Jackson Square Trailer Park, and the Demopolis City Council said at their March 19 meeting that they are ready to take action.

“My intention is to come to a resolution,” Demopolis Mayor Woody Collins told the council. “We give them 30 days to do something with it (the list of violations). If that doesn’t happen, we let the court system sort it out.”

Councilman Hugh Overmeyer said that the city has spent many hours documenting issues with the trailer park, and now he’s ready for the city to take action. If the property owner disagrees, he can appeal any action the city takes in court.

“That’s what the court is for,” Overmeyer said.

The council declared a burned-out home at 303 West Barnes St. a public nuisance. The city will tear down the house and place a lien on the property to repay the city when the property is sold.

The council voted to hire the Newt Move Group to help the city hire a development coordinator.

A city will soon have a new website. The city council will review recommendations about a new site from some experts before producing a request for proposal for a company to design the site.

Councilperson Dawn Hewitt said in addition to a new website, the city needs to be more engaged on social media platforms where many people now gather their news.
