Tigers V Spartans

First, the good news. The Demopolis High School Tigers scored their first points against the Mountain Brook Spartans in two years.

Now the bad news. The Tigers lost 44-7 on Aug. 22 in a nonconference game at the well-appointed Mountain Brook Spartan Stadium.

Not only is Mountain Brook a larger and wealthier school (it’s no coincidence that Mountain Brooks’ team color is green), but they also returned their entire roster from last year for the 2025 season.

The Tigers, under the leadership of new head coach Ricky Woods, found themselves down 30-0 at the half, but the Blue Heat didn’t surrender, and they scored a touchdown in the third quarter. The Tigers were throwing into the end zone for a second touchdown when the clock ran out.

Mountain Brook had 15 first downs to DHS’s 14, and time of possession was also close. The Spartans generated 350 total yards offense to DHS’s 215. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Mountain Brook’s yards often carried them into DHS’s end zone, while the Tigers struggled to get into Spartan territory. The game was well into the second half before the Tigers crossed the 50 yard line, and the Tigers only generated 50 yards of offence in the first half.

A bright spot for the Tigers was the play of senior Jamarcus Davis, who generated 68 yards on 18 carries. J.W. McAlpin, who shared quarterback duties with Jake Powell, was 8 of 15 for 98 yards.

The Tigers play Jackson High School for their first home game on Aug. 29.
