The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) has announced the first phase of the opening for Elevation in Montgomery, described as a research center, convening space, art gallery, and theater with overnight accommodations.
The center will feature AYA Soulful Dining and Elevation Café, both open to the community, as well as a fitness center that will be open to the community and guests.
Ithaka Hospitality Group from Auburn will manage the day-to-day operations of the center and hotel, said a press release on Wednesday.
“We are very excited and proud to announce the opening of Elevation,” said EJI executive director Bryan Stevenson. “By converting an abandoned structure that has been deteriorating for decades into something beautiful, we hope to provide refuge and comfort to the thousands of people who visit our Legacy Sites and strengthen Montgomery’s economic health and cultural landscape.”
Progress continues to be made at the site, with Montgomery Square set to open in February 2026 featuring art and information about Montgomery from 1955 to 1965.
A celebration of the opening will be held on Oct. 11. Jazz and classical saxophonist Branford Marsalis and cellist Yo-Yo Ma will hold a concert, though tickets are sold out.
