Montgomery Rep. Phillip Ensler has announced that he will not seek reelection to the Alabama House of Representatives in 2026.

Ensler made the announcement on his social media where he said that he will serve the remainder of his term in District 74 before returning to New York City to be with family.

Ensler said that he moved to Alabama in 2012 and was a teacher at Lee High School. He went on to become a civil rights attorney and a senior policy advisor for the City of Montgomery.

"Words cannot express how grateful I am for all who have supported me and our work," he said. "I thank each of you for your belief in a better Alabama for all."

In his announcement he touted working with the community on reducing gun violence, expanding mental health services, supporting public education, and others.

"No matter where I live, I will always be committed to fighting for a more inclusive, safe, prosperous, and loving world for all," he said.
