Legal Services Alabama (LSA) may be facing setbacks due to federal cuts, said an announcement on Tuesday.Â
The announcement said that Legal Services Corporation (LSC) President Ron Flagg met with LSA at a June Board of Directors meeting where concerns were shared that federal funding cuts to LSC could have an impact.Â
LSA is a nonprofit that provides legal services to Alabamians regardless of income. Concerns in particular were voiced that cuts could affect services for housing, family law, consumer protection, public benefits, elder law and veterans’ support.
"LSA is [73%] reliant on LSC funds to maintain daily operations," said the announcement. "While grants supplement funding for specific service areas, these awards are not robust enough to replace the funding provided by LSC."Â
The announcement goes on to say that Alabama does not allocate funding for civil legal aid. Cuts may result in staff layoffs and "significant" budget cuts.Â
"If the current administration chooses to fully defund LSC it will result in the defunding of LSA, creating heightened barriers to access to justice experienced by our residents with limited means," the announcement stated.
