The first fishing tournament in the new Selma Marina Pavilion on Saturday drew a good crowd and helped raise money for a local man with cancer.

Tournament Director Cory Ingram said they had 36 anglers compete in the event out of the recently rebuilt Selma Marina and raised money for Anthony Draime, who is suffering from cancer.

August is a tough time for a fishing tournament, Ingram said, and many teams struggled but managed to weigh in some big fish.

Angler William Crawford said, “The water is clear but it’s not moving much.” He also said it was warm. Ingram and others echoed that assessment.

As for what it would take to win, he added, “We figured it would take about what it took to win. But there were some big fish weighed in.”

There was a guaranteed payout for the first four places. The winners were:

1st place was Kenny Green with a 14.56 pound bag good for a $1,000 purse. He also won Big Fish which weighed in at 6.56 pounds.
2nd place winning $600 was the team of David Summer and Bucky Barrett with 13.09 pounds.
3rd place was Mark and Jackson Jones with 13.08 pounds and a $400 purse
4th was Wes and Gage King with 12.50 pounds taking home $200

Ingram said he was happy that this was the first tournament in the new Selma Marina Pavilion, and with the success of the tournament. “We had great support, a great crowd and a bunch of people showed up to help him (Draime) raise a lot of money.”

“I want to mention how well this town came together,” Ingram said “We were able to get about 60 sponsors. I don’t think there were any other businesses I could have called. Everyone was so generous.”

Draime was overwhelmed with the turnout and the support of the community.

“This lets me know I have a lot of friends I didn’t know I had,” Draime said.“Everybody seems to talk about how bad Selma is. I don’t see the bad. Selma has a lot of good people. Selma is my hometown.”
