Selma selected new leaders of the City Council on Tuesday.

Christie Thomas beat Landon Nichols with 54 percent of the votes to take over the Ward 2 seat. This seat was held by Susan Youngblood for 12 years, but she did not seek reelection.

Ward 3’s new council member is Clay Carmichael who won over Mead Walker with 53 percent of the votes. Miah Jackson currently holds this seat but gave it up to run for mayor.

On Wednesday, Carmichael said on Facebook, "Please hold me accountable to what I’ve heard you say we need to happen for Selma to improve. It’s not that hard if we can find common ground and work."

The winner of Ward 4 runoff is Lesia James who won over Javares Whitely with 57 percent of the votes. Angela Benjamin held this position but did not run for reelection.

James posted this on Facebook: "I am so filled with gratitude. Thank you so much Ward 4 for your support! Now let’s transform Ward 4!"

Ward 6 winner is Atkin Jemison. He beat B.L. Tucker with 66 percent of the votes. Incumbent Johnny Leashore came in third and lost his seat in the August general election.
