On Friday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 6 the 2022 Freedom Fest event will be held in downtown Selma by partners Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Selma, Foot Soldiers Park, Black Voters Matter, and Journeys for the Soul with Joanne Bland.Â
Freedom Fest commemorates the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The first event will be at 6 p.m. on Friday with the ‘Where Do We Go from Here’ reception and live panel discussion.
The panel will be moderated by Angela Benjamin. Panelists will include Jessica Baker, Lydia Chatmon, Brittney Houser, Ronald James, Timothy Ragland, and Billy Young.
The following day will kickoff at 10 a.m. with Beyond the Bridge Freedom Fest Community Resource Fair featuring vendors, free health screenings and school supplies for students.
TRHT Selma with their partner, the National Voting Rights Museum, will give away bookbags of school supplies to the first 30 students of ages 10 to 17 participating in the Foot Soldier experience.
The Jous Band of Tuscaloosa will provide the live entertainment for the Voting Rights Act Birthday Bash at 7 p.m. RSVP is required for this event.Â
All events are free to the public and will be held at the Anchor on 15 Lauderdale Street.Â
