Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy is part of112 organizations in the U.S. to benefit from a $12 million grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) through the ArtsHERE program.

ArtsHERE is a new pilot program in partnership with South Arts to support arts organizations in the nation.

“We are very excited to work with these organizations on their projects,” said Susie Surkamer, president and CEO of South Arts. “The arts are essential to the fabric of our nation, and at the heart of this necessity are the organizations and individuals who champion them. Through ArtsHERE, we are excited to continue expanding and enriching the arts landscape both nationally and within these unique local communities.”

Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy was granted $97,643 from NEA to "professionalize" its staff, hire a COO and continue its current programs.

"Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy preserves the rich heritage of African American quilting while fostering economic empowerment in rural Alabama," said a press release from ArtsHERE. "Through this work, they maintain cultural traditions and support community development through the arts."
