Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy will showcase a collection of handmade quilts and provide demonstrations at the Alabama Department of Archives and History on Saturday, March 22.Â
The quilt making tradition began in the isolated community of Boykin in the 19th century as a way for the women to make a living in a segregated and discriminating society.Â
The tradition has since grown into a state and nationally recognized art, often celebrated with events such as the Airing of the Quilts.Â
The event on March 22 at 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. will serve as a preview of the upcoming festival slated to take place on Oct. 4. Visit www.airingofthequilts.org for more information.Â
The Alabama Department of Archives and History is located at 624 Washington Avenue in Montgomery.Â
