Gee's bend at Elevation Hotel

A quilt pattern from Gee's Bend in Boykin on an entryway obelisk is said to be the first thing that visitors will see at the new Elevation Hotel in Montgomery.

The famed community in Wilcox County continues to cement their legacy. Its history stretches back before the Civil Rights Movement where residents began sewing quilts to make ends meet during an impoverished time.

In addition to the obelisk quilts can also be seen in the hallway and pedestrian area. They were made by Loretta Pettway Bennett, Sallie Mae Pettway Mixon, Qunnie Pettway, and Essie Bendolph Pettway.

"The lobby features a quilt by Loretta Pettway Bennett, while nearby EJI sites—including the Legacy Museum, where Gee’s Bend quilts are part of the permanent collection—deepen the connection between art, history, and place," said a post on social media.
