The George Evans Memorial Charity Golf Tournament returns for its 15th year this Wednesday, October 15, at Valley Grande Golf Course, continuing a legacy of community support and celebration honoring the lateSelma MayorGeorge Evans.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by a check presentation ceremonybenefitingthe Dallas County School System, Selma City School System and Cahaba Mill Health. Golfers will hit the course with a shotgunstartat 10 a.m.
Jeanie Evans, who organizes the event with her sons Patrick,Dwayneand Byron, said the tournament has grown into a meaningful tradition.
“We decided to keep celebrating George’s legacy through this tournament,” she said. “The proceeds go to our schools and help fund a special day for students with special needs each spring.”
That spring event, held at the George Evans Event Center, features themed festivities for students, including music, food, prizesand performances by cheerleaders from local schools. Last year’s “Red Carpet Tennis Shoe Ball” drew students from Keith, Dallas County High, Southside, SelmaHighand R.B. Hudson.
Evans emphasized that there’s still room for golfers to join. “We always take players up until the day of the tournament,” she said. “Just come out, pay your entryfeeand enjoy the day. We’llmake sure you have a cart.”
Sponsors are also welcome to contribute, even after the event. Last year, each school received $5,000, and organizers hope to surpass that amount this year.
