Gov. Kay Ivey has declared Feb. 8 Gunnar Henderson Day.
Before the State of the State address on Feb. 8, Ivey signed the proclamation for Selma's star baseball player and Morgan Academy graduate that names Feb. 8 as Gunnar Henderson Day in honor of his contributions to Alabama through his baseball talents.
The proclamation credits his sportsmanship and accomplishments during his time in high school and in the minor leagues before joining the Baltimore Orioles in the major leagues.
"Mr. Henderson's exemplar character serves as an inspiration to young athletes across Alabama, demonstrating my three C's of what makes a well-rounded leader - character, competence and commitment," Ivey said in the proclamation.
Henderson won the 2022 Minor League Player of the Year and 2023 Major League Rookie of the Year.
The city of Selma also named June 29 Gunnar Henderson Day in the city of Selma.
