A man from Grove Hill has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm after a high-speed chase incident in 2024.Â
A statement from U.S. Attorney Kevin Davidson identified Zachary Quinton Howard Mercer as the defendant who was the suspect of a stolen vehicle from Biloxi, MS on Sept. 20 of that year.Â
When police were notified that he was approaching the state line in Mobile County they attempted to stop him but were led on a chase on I-10, with speeds reaching 120 mph.Â
Mercer was ultimately stopped and found to have a loaded gun in his lap. He had previously been convicted of aggravated assault, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, theft of a firearm, and resisting arrest.
As he was a felon he was prohibited from owning a firearm. He will serve a three-year supervised release after his term is up.Â
