The first Hymnfest gospel music sing along event is coming to Old Cahawba Park on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m.

The event will be held in the century-old St. Luke's Church at the park.

“We are excited to invite everyone to come together and sing hymns that have been sung for over 100 years in churches throughout rural Alabama,” said Christine Weerts, an organizer.

“Community singing is a heart-healthy experience for everyone who participate, and will encourage people from all church denominations to join together in celebrating the rich tradition of church hymnody.”

Selma and Orrville musicians will lead the sing along and includes choirs from St. Paul’s Episcopal and First (Missionary) Baptist in Selma.

The event is sponsored by a tourism grant from Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center, the Daniel Foundation and Thrivent Financial. It is free and hymnals will be provided.

Old Cahawba Park is located at 9518 Cahaba Road.
