If Bugs Could Talk at Old Cahawba

A past If Bugs Could Talk event at Old Cahawba.

Old Cahawba Archaeological Park is holding its If Bugs Could Talk program Saturday May 6.

It will take place at the Perine Well, a world-famous artesian well that was the water supply for a mansion formerly located on the lot.

Carmen Yelle, who works for Old Cahawba, said the program will be “studying the history of artesian wells at Old Cahawba and conducting an investigation into the macro-invertebrates that live in and around the Perine Well and what they can tell us about in quality of the water.”

Old Cahawba, the site of Alabama’s first State Capitol from 1819 to 1826, was known for its many artesian wells that supplied the folks that lived there with fresh, cool drinking water. After the state capitol moved to Tuscaloosa in 1826, the town continued to flourish and even grow, and was the county seat of Dallas County until it moved to Selma in 1866. Cahawba was one of the largest and richest cities in the United States. Many of those wells are still on the site, which is now an archaeological site open to the public to explore.

Tickets are $8, and you can get them by calling the park at 334-872-8058. Tickets are limited so call ASAP.

The next program at Old Cahawba will be the Bring Your Own Bike tour on Saturday June 3.
