A judge has dismissed a lawsuit that former Montgomery Police Chief Ernest N. Finley, Jr. filed against Mayor Steven Reed alleging discrimination after he resigned in 2021.

A recent announcement from the city stated that there was "no evidence" of discrimination or retaliation when Finley resigned.

The announcement cited a 33-page document from U.S. District Judge Kristi K. DuBose saying that there were concerns from the city about Finley's leadership during a time where there was reportedly a rise in violent crime and internal complaints from the department.

It was also said that the city followed "proper" procedures during the legal process and that there was no interference with the Ethics Commission.

“We appreciate the court’s thorough review and are grateful for a ruling that reaffirms the City’s commitment to fairness, accountability, and the rule of law," said a statement from Reed. "Our administration has always put public safety and integrity first, and we will continue working to ensure Montgomery is a safe, equitable city for all. I am grateful for the dedicated officers who continue to serve with honor and professionalism every day.”
