Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) will host the Keep the Beat concert on Saturday, May 10 in an effort to address chronic absenteeism.
A statement from MPS said that they are working with a "celebrity guest" that will be announced in the future.
“As we wrap up this school year and begin planning for the next, it’s critical that families understand the impact of consistent attendance and that includes summer school,” said Interim Superintendent Jamie Wilson.
“Just as important is ensuring schools have accurate, up-to-date contact information so we can communicate with families. This concert is our way of thinking outside the box and bringing together students, families, and the entire community to enjoy a great event while hearing important messages, and most importantly, seeing our incredible students shine on stage.”
MPS will also promote its PowerSchool, which is the official student information system that allows schools to contact parents about absences, as well as emergencies and other updates.
“We can’t stress it enough: updated contact info is essential,” Wilson said. “We’re asking parents and guardians to take just two minutes to visit our website and verify that their phone numbers, email addresses, and home addresses are current. If anything needs to be changed, it’s easy to update online or by contacting your child’s school.”
Admission is free for parents and guardians that update student information using PowerSchool.
The event will be hosted at Riverfront Amphitheater at 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
