The City of Livingston has been awarded a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for economic and jobs growth.
An announcement from the Alabama Department of Community and Economic Affairs (ADECA) said that the funds will be used to provide sewer services on the west side of Interstate 59 in the city.
The sewer system will be expanded to support three new businesses that includes a hotel, a gas/station and a restaurant. It is expected to create 33 jobs.
“This project will bring needed jobs and commerce for the Black Belt area of Alabama,” Gov. Kay Ivey said. “I am pleased to award these funds, and I am optimistic that this will lead to additional good economic news for Livingston, Sumter County and west Alabama.”
Additionally, the project will involve extending the sewer system from the eastern side of Interstate 59 to the west side by boring under the highway, said the announcement.
“In recent years, ADECA joined Gov. Ivey to support several economic development projects along Interstate 59 south of Tuscaloosa, and this project is a welcomed addition because it means new jobs and new commerce,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “I commend developers and local officials for their work in a project that should pay dividends for Livingston and Sumter County.”
The city of Livingston is providing $187,000 in local funds for the project.
