The Local Farm Cooperative, in collaboration with Transform Alabama, will put on its first Hip Hop Harvest Festival, called "Seeds for the Future" on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A press release from the cooperative said that the event seeks to educate people on "food justice and food sovereignty" in Selma and elsewhere in the Black Belt. It will feature local and regional hip hop artists, art installations, and educational activities.

Some highlights of the event are the following from the press release:

  • Educational Booths and Speakers discussing the importance of food justice and sovereignty, cooperative economics, climate and environmental justice, youth, advocacy, and sustainable farming practices.
  • Youth Leadership Development programs by The Local Farm Cooperative and Transform Alabama that empower youth through education on agriculture, food preparation, and civic education.
  • Civic Engagement opportunities for attendees to connect with local organizations, learn about volunteer opportunities, and engage in discussions about creating a more equitable and just community.
  • Sustainable Agriculture demonstrations of traditional agriculture and indigenous permaculture practices.
  • Cultural Celebration with performances by hip hop artists, live art and art installations, and interactive booths that highlight the rich cultural heritage of the community.

"We are thrilled to partner with The Local Farm Cooperative, as the Hip Hop Harvest Festival aligns with our mission of building a more equitable democracy through Hip Hop-based community events.”, said Dr. Adia Winfrey, Transform Alabama Co-Founder and Executive Director. “We're excited to bring people together to party with a purpose."

The event will be held at The Local Farm Cooperative, located at 300 Wheeler Ave. in Selma.
