Demopolis falls to Northside in first home game of the season

The Northside High School Rams lived up to their name as they rammed the ball down the throat of the Demopolis High School Tigers in a special Thursday night game at Demopolis Sept. 10.

A statewide audience watching the Alabama Public Television AHSAA game of the week saw the Rams hammer the Tigers with a relentless and seemingly unstoppable running game. The final score in the Tiger's first home game of the season was Northside High School 49, Demopolis High School 20.

Northside didn’t attempt a pass the entire game. They didn’t have to. Demopolis defense, especially Will Compton and Emonte Charleston, did what they could, but Northside seldom lost yardage on the ground. Their backs, especially Bennett Green, pounded the ball up the middle or slipped tackles and ran around the edges.

One of Northside’s seven touchdowns was scored on a recovered fumble in the endzone.

The Tigers weren’t toothless on offense. They scored three touchdowns on some beautiful pass plays led by quarterback Whit Goodwin. The teams were tied at 7 late in the first quarter, but Northside pulled away early in the second quarter and never looked back. The score was Northside 28, Demopolis 7 at the half, and in the second half Demopolis could only put 6 points on the board to Northside’s 21.

Demopolis Head Football Coach Dustin Goodwin told his players after the game that they can still have a good season and play for the number-two seed in the playoffs despite this loss to a regional team.

The Tigers face the Holt High School Ironmen at Holt next week.
