Marion police arrested a man Tuesday for firing a gun into a vehicle occupied by a woman and an infant before fleeing the scene in a semi-truck.
Marion Police Department officers responded at about 12:16 p.m. to reports of shots fired into a vehicle near West Alabama Bank on Washington Street in Marion.
Police identified the suspect as Terry Deonta Harris. Authorities said Harris fired a weapon into the occupied vehicle and assaulted the female victim while attempting to force her to drive into an occupied building.
After the incident, Harris fled the scene in a semi-truck, police said.
Law enforcement agencies from multiple jurisdictions assisted in locating the suspect. Authorities said Harris was found near the intersection of Highway 5 and 80 and taken into custody without further incident.
Agencies involved in the apprehension included the Marion Police Department, Uniontown Police Department, Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Perry County E-911 Dispatch.
Harris was transported to the Marengo County Jail and charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, reckless endangerment, domestic violence/assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
“We are thankful that no innocent lives were lost during this dangerous incident, and we thank and commend all responding officers and agencies for their professionalism, teamwork, and rapid action in helping bring this situation to a safe conclusion,” Marion police said in a social media statement. “Violent crimes of this nature will not be tolerated in our community, and the Marion Police Department remains committed to protecting the citizens of Marion and holding offenders accountable.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said additional charges could be filed. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Marion Police Department.
