The fountain at City Hall is flowing once again.
The restored fountain was revealed at a Facebook Live broadcast on Nov. 24. Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. was joined by the building inspector and representatives from Waterworks, Public Works, Code Enforcement, Recreation, City Engineers and Fire departments. Perkins gave special recognition to the staff of the water distribution plant.
“They actually did the hands-on work to get the fountain up and running,” Perkins said.
“Water has a spiritual representation, because nothing can live without water,” Perkins said at the unveiling of the restored fountain. “The fact that water is flowing again in the fountain says that Selma is alive. Water also represents fertility. Nothing grows without water, so we see Selma’s growth here today in the water of the fountain."
"It also represents refreshment. We’ve been talking a lot about re-imagining Selma, so we are refreshing our thinking and beginning a process of a renewal, a renaissance in Selma. Water also represents motion."
"When water is moving, that means it’s alive and well. Purity comes from the motion of water. So, its motion, its purity, its life [are] all represented by the fountain we have restored here in Selma.”
