DMV Kisok

Montgomery County Probate Judge J C Love III wants to install self-service kiosks (not necessarily this model) in Public stores. The Montgomery County Commission isn't sure enough citizens will use them to cover the cost.

If you live in Montgomery County, would you use a kiosk to renew your car tag?

Montgomery County Probate Judge J C Love III thinks you would. The Montgomery County Commission isn’t so sure.

Love told the county commission at their Nov. 4 work session that he would like to install six self-service kiosks at Publix grocery stores throughout the county and one at the west probate office. Love said that kiosks would be more convenient than driving to county offices for services.

The kiosks would provide services like printing out cart tag stickers and renewing car tags immediately. Love said he’s also talking with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency about using the kiosks for driver’s licenses.

The county would have to pay a vendor $400,000 for the service. The county would be responsible for about 400 transactions per month per kiosk, and they would be held to a three-year contract.

Commission Chairman Doug Singleton said he was afraid the kiosks may not be used enough to cover expenses. Commissioner Justin Castanza agreed.

“I love the idea of the convenience of a kiosk,” Castanza said. “I don’t love the idea of a half a million dollar risk that the county is taking.”

Singleton said that he would arrange talks to further discuss terms of the contract. No action was taken on Nov. 4, and the matter will be revisited in the future.

The Montgomery County Commission meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 101 South Lawrence Street. Information sessions begin at 10 a.m. followed by the formal meeting.

Livestreamed meetings can be seen on the commission’s YouTube and Facebook pages.
