An off-duty first responder of Montgomery Fire & Rescue (MFR) saved the life of a man who collapsed while playing pickleball at a YMCA location.

A statement from MFR said that Lieutenant Demetrius Gilmore was playing pickleball at the Bell Road YMCA when he saw a man collapse.

"He quickly assessed the patient, began CPR, directed bystanders, applied an automated external defibrillator (AED) and successfully delivered a shock which restored the patient’s pulse before on‑duty crews arrived," said the statement.

The man was "alert and oriented" by the time medics arrived to transport him for treatment.

"Because of his swift actions and expert training, a life was saved," the statement said.
