The Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) won a contract with Konecranes to deliver two rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes, said an announcement by the Alabama Port Authority.

The announcement stated that the cranes will server as the "backbone" for container handling at the ICTF.

“These new cranes represent an exciting step forward in bringing the Montgomery facility online,” said Doug Otto, Interim Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority.

“Konecranes has a proven track record at our Port, and their technology will ensure that our intermodal customers benefit from efficient, safe, and reliable operations. This investment positions the facility to meet growing demand and strengthens Alabama’s competitive advantage in global trade.”

The Konecranes RTGs will reportedly feature smart technologies for "safety, accuracy, and yard efficiency" in transfers between rail and truck. Their delivery is scheduled for late 2026.

The Montgomery ICTF is located on a 272-acre site, accessing Interstate 65, Interstate 85, and Highway 31. It is expected to support transportation needs of manufacturers, automotive suppliers, and industries and has capacity of 60,000 TEUs per year, or 30,000 shipping containers.
