An officer with the Montgomery Police Department was allegedly assaulted by a suspect during a traffic stop on Saturday, said a statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

The statement said that Agents assigned to ALEA's State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Major Crimes Unit responded to the incident in which the officer was "on a detail" with the Metro Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Unit.

The officers of the MACS Unit attempted to stop a car near the 1000 Block of Eastern Boulevard in Montgomery where the suspect reportedly got out and led police on a foot chase.

The suspect was identified as Edward Burnes, 31, of Montgomery. He was charged with assault in the second degree assault and certain persons forbidden.

"The MPD Officer was transported to Jackson Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the assault," said the statement.

Burnes was booked at the Montgomery County Jail without bond.
