Montgomery officials to raise new flag on Thursday

Officials of the City of Montgomery will raise its new flag during a ceremony at City Hall on Thursday, Oct. 1. 

The new flag design was chosen from a contest to replace the previous design that had been in use since 1952. The city council approved the new flag designed by Joshua Gordon during a meeting on May 5. 

According to a statement from the city the colors and patterns represent: 

• Red diagonal bands symbolize momentum, movement and Montgomery’s evolving story.
• A blue ceremonial ribbon represents renewal, unity and new beginnings.
• Nine old gold stars represent Montgomery’s nine City Council districts.
• A central outlined star represents Montgomery’s role as Alabama’s capital city and serves as a symbol of unity and leadership.
• Olive branches above and below the central star represent peace, resilience, growth and goodwill among Montgomery residents.

The ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Montgomery City Hall on 103 North Perry Street.
