Family slammed for disturbing nesting birds at nature reserve

Visitors disturbed a nature reserve and birds' nests - by posing for a watch cam and throwing cigarette butts in hides.

Footage captured the kayaking family disregarding the "no landing - wildlife only" signs near breeding oystercatchers.

The RSPB said the family was aware of its monitoring camera and continued their disturbance - even pulling faces at the camera placed over the nest.

The charity says it has seen an increase in antisocial behavior which is causing "unnecessary disturbance to wildlife and putting this precious landscape at risk" at Arne nature reserve, in Dorset.

It has reported people have been stealing water rescue equipment and ignoring signs aimed at protecting birds - and cited the incident in July as being of particular concern.

Kayakers and paddleboarders have been seen landing on the beach, with one craft pictured propped up against one of the signs.

The charity said another "particularly concerning" problem has seen cigarette butts dumped in bird hides where there were signs telling visitors not to smoke and while the UK is under a red fire alert due to the increasing number and risk of wildfires.

A spokesperson said: "One of the throw lines, which forms part of our water rescue equipment at the new seasonal trail to the lagoon, has been stolen for a second time.

"This equipment is there for people's safety, and its removal puts others at risk.

"We know that the vast majority of our visitors love and appreciate Arne and want to see its wildlife protected.

"Please help us by following the signs, keeping a safe distance from wildlife, and taking care of this special place.

"Our team works hard to protect the reserve and the wildlife that depends on it, but we need your help too.

"Thank you for helping us keep Arne safe for wildlife and for everyone who enjoys this wonderful landscape."
