Mesmerizing video shows the sun rising for 84 days in America's northernmost city.

In Utqiagvik, residents have entered a prolonged period of continuous daylight as the Arctic summer takes hold.

A mind-bending time-lapse shows what should be the sunset and sunrise, but sees the Sun just dipping lower in the sky before rising again.

The National Weather Service Fairbanks said on Sunday, May 10: "Today in Utqiagvik (the northernmost city in the United States), the sun rose above the horizon at 2:57 AM and won’t set again for 84 straight days or until August 2nd!"

The phenomenon, known as the midnight sun, occurs in regions above the Arctic Circle where the Earth’s axial tilt keeps the sun visible for extended periods during summer months.

The timelapse captures the moment the sun skirts the horizon before rising fully, marking the transition into a season where darkness will not return until early August.

Utqiagvik, formerly known as Barrow, experiences this annual cycle as part of its extreme seasonal contrasts, with months of continuous daylight in summer followed by prolonged darkness in winter, when the sun does not rise for around 66 days.
