MISSOULA, Mont. - The Missoula Fire Department is issuing a winter river safety advisory following a recent incident at Jacob’s Island Dog Park. They emphasize the dangers of icy river conditions and urge the public to exercise caution.
Firefighters, trained in water rescue, highlight the unique challenges posed by icy environments. They urge residents to stay off ice surfaces, especially near rivers, due to the instability caused by moving water beneath the ice.
Pet owners are advised to keep animals on a leash near icy areas. In case of an emergency involving an animal, the public is instructed not to attempt a rescue but to call 911 for professional assistance.
The department encourages residents to share this safety message widely to prevent further incidents. "Prevention and awareness are key to avoiding further tragedies," the Missoula Fire Department stated.
They extend their thoughts to the loved ones of Danit Ehrlich and stress the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to protect both people and pets in the community.
