A street sign made famous by Paul McCartney'snew album has been stolen for a second time.

The sign for Dungeon Lane in Speke, Merseyside, disappeared just weeks after Liverpool City Council replaced it following an earlier theft.

The road has attracted international attention since McCartney, 83, named his latest album "The Boys of Dungeon Lane" after it.

The council had only recently restored the signage in May after the original sign vanished following the album's announcement.

A spokesperson said: "It's deeply disappointing to see that someone has acted selfishly by stealing the sign for Dungeon Lane.

"These signs are an important part of our streets and reinstalling them costs both taxpayers' money and staff time.

"With the release of Paul McCartney's new album, we knew that the signage would be popular, and we would expect visitors to show it the proper respect.

"When the sign is replaced, we ask people to think of others and to take only photos."

Dungeon Lane has received attention since the release of McCartney's latest album, which draws heavily on memories of his childhood in Liverpool.

The album, released last month, takes its name from the Speke road close to where the future Beatle grew up after his family moved to the area in 1950.

McCartney has spoken about spending time around Dungeon Lane as a youngster and recalled visiting the area for birdwatching expeditions.

The 83-year-old even encouraged fans to look up Dungeon Lane on Google Street View when the album was announced, which showed a boy holding a sign bearing the album title.

The attention brought fresh interest to the otherwise ordinary suburban road.
